Never regret. If it’s good, it’s wonderful. If it’s bad, it’s experience.

From Zanzibar to Intuit to Columbia University

An attempt to even sum up the 4 months spent in Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania would do my experiences during this past semester a severe injustice. Even my sporadic and incomplete travel blog only scratched the surface of the amazing and wonderful encounters and adventures I had abroad. To say the least, spending the semester in Zanzibar, Tanzania was the smartest decision I’ve made so far in my college career, or life even.

As my transition back to the first and modern world ends in the following week, I’ll begin a new period of creative development and growth working in the marketing department of Intuit’s Payments Division in Woodland Hills. And in light of the finally official acceptance from Columbia University, I’ll be moved into New York City come the final week of August.

5 months in, and my prediction of 2012 being my year has already proven to be true. But Zanzibar was only the best possible beginning to the year, and I’m just only getting started.

Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life - and travel - leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks - on your body or on your heart - are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.

All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.

Smoking a joint a week for up to seven years doesn’t hurt lung function, according to researchers at the University of California, San Francisco. They came up with that number after following more than 5,000 people for 20 years. The results were just published in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Jon Huntsman doubles down in fight with Mitt Romney

The more I read about him the more I like him. He’d probably steal my vote from Obama if he were to win the nomination.

Potential

Here’s a word that I have a special affinity towards. Used negatively, it could certainly convey disappointment. To say that a person had so much potential and never fulfilled it is something that few would want to hear. Used positively, however, and the word potential becomes what I consider to be one of the greatest compliments. Potential means that who you are right now is not the best that you can be. And that’s a comforting thought, no matter how great you might think you are right now. You can be better. This is a forward looking idea that builds on the ideas of improvement and progress. And it’s hard to disagree with the notion that people can always make further strides towards simply being better.

Furthermore, to say that a person has a ton of potential is to say that you believe that this person has the ability to accomplish things better than that person has already achieved to date. It tells the person that you believe in him or her. And taken with the right attitude, this idea of potential can prove to be quite powerful. So the next time you truly want to compliment people on their abilities, tell them how much potential you think they have.
